Marijuana Legislation Moving Forward, With High Level Of Public Interest

December 29th, 2017

Justice Minister Andrew Parsons says there’s still a lot of work to do with marijuana legislation in the new year, but he’s pleased with the level of public interest and support.

Parsons says the province is doing its best to direct legislation while looking to the federal government as they drive marijuana laws forward. He says there’s still a lot of work left to do, but they can only move at the pace of the federal government who are leading the charge for cannabis legalization.

Newfoundland and Labrador has already unveiled legislation around distribution, production and sales.

Parsons says his department is working on the other considerations around legalized marijuana, and he’s pleased by the level of public engagement. He says no matter where he goes people are bringing up marijuana because it affects everything from driving, schools, workplaces and the healthcare system.

Parsons says he knows the laws are going to evolve as the country gets used to introducing marijuana and his job is to prepare for the evolution.
