New Hazardous Material Regulations Coming In December

New workplace regulations are coming into effect for Newfoundland and Labrador in December.

Alterations to Workplace Hazardous Material Information System regulations have been published and workplaces falling under provincial Occupational Health and Safety jurisdiction must fully comply with the new provincial WHMIS requirements by December 1st, 2018.

Some of these changes include a new classification for hazardous chemicals; different hazard categories and more of them; supplier label requirement include new pictograms for hazard classes and prescribed hazard statements and signal words.

Across Canada, including this province, WHMIS legislation has been amended to adopt parts of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS).

Minister of Service NL, Sherry Gambin-Walsh says the changes will enhance chemical safety and also harmonize our regulations with federal legislation and WHMIS legislation of other provinces and territories.
