MADD Canada President Praises NL Road Safety Cannabis Laws

May 29th, 2018

The President of MADD Canada is pleased with new road safety laws surrounding cannabis which becomes legal this year.

Patricia Hynes-Coates says the province’s initiative and proposed legislation are leading the country.

She says the laws announced yesterday are some of the strongest laws in the country, second only to PEI, and she would like to see them enacted as soon as possible.

Impaired driving legislation will be updated with slightly heavier vehicle and license penalties. There will be a zero tolerance level for drugs and alcohol for drivers under the age of 22.

Hynes-Coates says the legislation she saw yesterday is exactly what’s needed. Alcohol-related impairment deaths are going down and she says most crashes currently are drug related.

Hynes-Coates says a zero tolerance approach is the best way to handle the situation, and the laws proposed yesterday go a long way to address that.
