LISTEN New Fire Chief Tackles Fighting Fires In An Expanding City:

Metro’s first female fire chief is looking for new ways to tackle firefighting and fill the gaps created by the expansion of the City of St. John’s.

Yesterday, Sherry Colford was named the new Fire Chief of the St. John’s Regional Fire Department. She takes over for Chief Jerry Peach, who announced his retirement two months ago.\

Colford says the support has been overwhelming. She says there’s been a huge outpouring of support, and being surrounded by a strong team will help her push the department ahead in the coming years.

Colford has 15 years with the department and most recently managed 911 and Fire Prevention and she assumes responsibility for the department effective immediately.

Colford says with a City growing as fast as St. John’s, fire services needs to ensure no areas are being left behind.

She says St. John’s is expanding rapidly so fire stations need to be strategically placed to fill the gaps, and the department needs to take advantage of new technology like using tablets in their trucks.
