Safety Tips For Back To School

September 5th, 2018
  • It’s the most wonderful time of the year… at least, that’s what many parents are saying.

The kids go back to school this week, and the RNC are reminding parents, students, and motorists alike of some important safety tips.

Parents are reminded to educate their children on crosswalk safety. You should always use a crosswalk wherever possible and always make sure traffic has come to a complete stop before crossing.

Parents should also walk younger children to the bus stop whenever possible, and wait with them until the bus arrives. You should also encourage your child to walk with friends and not by themselves.

Students are reminded to wait on the sidewalk until the bus has come to a complete stop and opened it’s doors, and to line up single file while getting on the bus. Stay off your phones and mobile devices while walking and stay aware of your surroundings.

Motorists are reminded that it is illegal to pass a school bus while it is stoped with the sign extended and lights flashing. This includes all lanes and opposite sides of the road. Failure to do this will result in the loss of demerit points and fines up to $1,200.

Motorists are also reminded to stay off their phones, reduce speeds in school zones, obey crossing guards, and to pay attention to the actions of any children in the area.

The RNC will have an increased presence in school zones again this year.
