Government Releasing 12 Days Of Fire Safety

Municipal Affairs and Environment is offering up some fire safety tips with the 12 Days of Fire Safety for this holiday season.

The Department says candles are popular during the holiday season, but the open flames are a common cause of fire in the home.

They say artificial candles are preferable, but when using a candle with an open flame, take the proper precautions.

Always blow out candles when leaving a room or going to bed; never burn a candle if medical oxygen is used; and place candles on a secure, clean surface a minimum of 30 centimeters from anything flammable.

Also, use sturdy candle holders that won’t easily tip; light candles carefully, keeping them a safe distance from loose clothing and hair; and don’t burn a candle all the way down as the heat can ignite some candle holders.

The Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment will release fire safety tips on each weekday leading up to Christmas Eve.
