  • Group Of Bell Island Mothers Taking Back Community From Opioids

A group of mothers and their supporters are making a difference on Bell Island.

Heal Bell Island, affectionately known as The Mom’s Group, has been successful in addressing intravenous drug use in the community through a simple formula of support groups, community events and a needle exchange.

The group is being credited for helping to cut intravenous drug use on the island in half.

Founding mom Susan Boone started the group when her own daughter ran into problems with drugs. She soon realized that services were lacking.

She says there was a mental health and addictions counsellor who would visit the island once a week with a long waiting list and sporadic service due to reliance on the ferry schedule. She got in contact with Tree Walsh who helped them organize the In Good Hands needle exchange group.
